South Korea triples AI investment to $6.8 billion in 2026 budget
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung announced on Tuesday a threefold increase in funding for artificial intelligence (AI) in the 2026 budget, marking what he called the country's "entry into the AI era."
The government plans to allocate 10.1 trillion won ($6.85 billion) to the sector — up from 2025 levels — with 2.6 trillion won dedicated to integrating AI into industries and public services, and 7.5 trillion won for training and infrastructure.
The total 2026 national budget stands at 728 trillion won ($494 billion), an 8.1% increase over 2025.
South Korea, home to chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, aims to become one of the world’s top three AI powers. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently announced plans to supply 260,000 advanced semiconductors to Korea to boost industrial AI capacity.
