Deadly floods in Safi raise death toll to 21

The death toll from severe flooding in the Moroccan province of Safi has risen to 21, according to local authorities. The floods were triggered by intense rainfall and thunderstorms that caused sudden and exceptional river overflows within a very short period of time.

The heavy downpours struck several areas of the province on Sunday, overwhelming drainage systems and leaving many neighborhoods affected by rising waters. The rapid onset of the floods caught residents off guard, complicating evacuation efforts in some locations.

Emergency services remain fully mobilized as search and rescue operations continue, particularly in areas where people are still reported missing. Authorities are also working to secure damaged zones and prevent further risks to residents.

In parallel, local and regional officials have launched measures to provide assistance and support to affected families, including temporary shelter and essential aid. The incident highlights the growing challenges posed by extreme weather events and the need for strengthened prevention and emergency preparedness.
