Spain fines Airbnb 64 million euros over illegal housing listings
Spanish authorities have imposed a substantial fine of more than 64 million euros on Airbnb for publishing advertisements for properties that are not authorized for short-term rental. The sanction comes amid growing concern over Spain’s housing crisis, particularly in major cities and tourist areas.
According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the penalty is final and reflects repeated violations of national regulations governing tourist accommodations. Officials stated that the platform failed to adequately verify the legality of certain listings made available to users.
The government has instructed Airbnb to remove all unlawful content and ensure full compliance with Spanish housing and consumer protection laws. Authorities argue that illegal short-term rentals contribute to rising rents and reduced availability of housing for residents.
The case highlights Spain’s increasingly firm stance on regulating digital platforms and protecting access to affordable housing in a strained real estate market.
