New US-Ukraine talks open in Berlin after reported progress

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and American negotiators resumed high-level talks in Berlin on Monday, following several hours of discussions the previous day that both sides described as constructive. The meetings come as Kyiv seeks firm support from Washington for a ceasefire that would not require territorial concessions to Russia.

The US envoy involved in the negotiations indicated that progress had been made on a broader peace framework, which includes political, economic, and security components. While few details were made public, another round of talks was scheduled to continue discussions on the proposed roadmap.

Later on Monday, President Zelensky is also expected to meet key European leaders, including Germany’s chancellor, France’s president, and the British prime minister, alongside representatives of the European Union and NATO. European governments have expressed concern that any agreement rewarding territorial gains through force would undermine long-term stability on the continent.

Kyiv has reiterated its opposition to proposals involving the transfer of Ukrainian territory and instead supports a freeze along the current front lines, combined with strong international security guarantees. Ukrainian officials argue that such guarantees are essential to prevent renewed aggression.

Meanwhile, Moscow has reacted cautiously to revised proposals put forward by Ukraine and its European partners, signaling potential resistance. As fighting continues on the ground, diplomatic efforts remain under pressure to deliver tangible results amid growing fatigue from the prolonged conflict.
