Hong Kong publisher convicted under national security and sedition laws

Hong Kong publisher and media figure Jimmy Lai has been found guilty on all charges brought against him under the national security framework imposed by Beijing, marking one of the most significant legal rulings since the law came into force.

The court convicted the 78-year-old businessman of conspiring to collude with foreign entities and of publishing seditious material, offenses that carry the possibility of a life sentence. Judges ruled that Lai’s actions went beyond journalistic activity and amounted to efforts aimed at undermining China’s political system.

According to the verdict, the charges stem from activities linked to the now-defunct newspaper Apple Daily, which Lai founded and which became a prominent voice during the 2019 pro-democracy protests. Prosecutors argued that the publication and its leadership had actively sought international pressure against Beijing and the Hong Kong authorities.

The court highlighted what it described as inconsistencies in Lai’s testimony, concluding that his statements lacked credibility. In a lengthy written judgment, judges stated that the defendant’s intent was incompatible with national security interests and posed a threat to public order.

Lai has remained in detention since late 2020, with his trial beginning in December 2023 after prolonged pretrial proceedings. A separate hearing will be held to determine sentencing, a decision that is being closely watched both locally and internationally.

The ruling adds to ongoing debates about press freedom, judicial independence, and the impact of the national security law on Hong Kong’s media landscape.
