China urges US not to interfere in South China Sea affairs

Beijing, China — China on Monday warned the United States not to involve itself in maritime disputes in the South China Sea, responding to US criticism over Beijing’s handling of Filipino fishermen in contested waters.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that Washington “is not a party to the South China Sea issue” during a routine press briefing. Guo accused the US of distorting facts and supporting the Philippines’ provocations, asserting that China’s actions were “lawful, professional, and restrained.”

Guo called on the Philippines to stop “infringements and provocations” and refrain from staging maritime incidents that challenge China’s sovereignty.

The US State Department had earlier condemned what it described as China’s “use of water cannons and cutting of anchor lines” against Filipino fishing boats near Sabina Shoal. Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said China’s actions threatened the livelihoods of Filipino fishermen and undermined regional stability.

In response, the Philippines announced it would file a diplomatic protest, highlighting incidents in which about 20 Filipino fishing vessels faced aggressive maneuvers from Chinese ships, resulting in injuries to at least three fishermen and significant damage to two boats.

Tensions between China and the Philippines, a US ally, have escalated repeatedly in recent years due to overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea.
