Merzouga: Royal Gendarmerie rescues two tourists swept away by floods
Merzouga, Morocco — Members of the Royal Gendarmerie stationed in Sidi Ali, within the commune of Merzouga in Errachidia province, carried out a successful rescue operation on Sunday after sudden floods swept away a vehicle carrying two Spanish tourists.
Heavy rainfall hit the region, triggering rapid water flows that caught the travelers by surprise as they were driving through the area. Their car was dragged by the rising waters, placing them in a critical and dangerous situation.
Alerted by local witnesses, Royal Gendarmerie units responded swiftly and managed to reach the scene in time. The two tourists were safely extracted from the vehicle before it was completely submerged. Authorities confirmed that neither suffered serious injuries.
Following the rescue, the travelers were taken to a nearby hotel, where they received assistance and necessary care. The operation was widely praised for its speed and professionalism.
As unstable weather conditions continue to affect several areas in southeastern Morocco, local authorities are urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant. They advise avoiding riverbeds, flooded crossings, and exposed routes, while closely monitoring weather updates to reduce risks.
