Oil field operations halted in Iraq after drone attack
Oil production at a field operated by the American company HKN Energy in northern Iraq has been suspended following an attack involving drones, according to authorities in the autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
The incident occurred near the Sarsang oil field, located in the province of Dohuk Province. Regional officials reported that the facility suffered damage during the attack, forcing operators to temporarily halt production while assessments and security measures are carried out.
Security sources indicated that at least two drones were used in the assault, which authorities described as a terrorist act carried out by a group banned in Iraq. Although no casualties were immediately reported, the strike disrupted energy operations and raised concerns about the security of oil infrastructure in the region.
The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed the interruption of production and stated that investigations are underway. Oil fields in northern Iraq play an important role in the regional economy, and attacks on energy facilities can have broader economic and security implications.
Analysts note that tensions in the region have occasionally led to threats against oil installations, which are considered strategic assets. Authorities are working to restore operations while reinforcing protective measures around energy infrastructure.
