France blocks Tesla’s supervised autonomous driving system over safety concerns

France has decided not to authorize Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system for the time being, citing unresolved safety concerns surrounding the deployment of advanced driver-assistance technologies on public roads.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot confirmed that the French government was not ready to approve the American automaker’s supervised autonomous driving feature, despite growing adoption of similar technologies in several international markets. According to French authorities, the current version of the system does not yet provide sufficient guarantees to justify regulatory approval.

The decision highlights the cautious approach taken by France toward partially automated driving systems, as manufacturers race to introduce increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence-powered solutions.

Safety remains the central obstacle

Tesla’s FSD technology is designed to allow vehicles to perform several driving tasks autonomously, including steering, adapting speed and navigating certain road situations. However, the system remains supervised, meaning that drivers must stay alert and be prepared to take control of the vehicle whenever necessary.

Unlike fully autonomous vehicles, Tesla’s technology still relies on human oversight. This distinction has become a key issue for regulators evaluating whether such systems can be safely introduced on national road networks.

Philippe Tabarot acknowledged the technological advances offered by FSD but argued that the current balance between innovation and safety requirements was not yet sufficient for approval in France.

The French authorities have reportedly identified several concerns linked to the system’s operation and the responsibilities placed on drivers during automated driving phases.

Tesla expands globally despite European regulatory caution

Tesla’s FSD feature is currently available in only a limited number of countries. In Europe, selected markets such as Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark have allowed access to the technology under specific regulatory conditions.

The system’s availability varies depending on national legislation, infrastructure and safety assessments. In Belgium, for example, the subscription-based service is offered for around €99 per month.

The different approaches across European countries illustrate the challenges facing the automotive industry as governments attempt to establish common standards for autonomous driving while protecting road users.

A strategic challenge for the future of mobility

The French decision comes at a time when Tesla and other global automakers are intensifying their investments in artificial intelligence, automation and connected vehicle technologies.

For Tesla, gaining approval in major European markets remains an important step in expanding the commercial reach of its autonomous driving ecosystem. For regulators, however, the priority remains ensuring that technological progress does not come at the expense of road safety.

The debate over FSD approval reflects a broader global discussion about the future of mobility, where artificial intelligence is transforming the relationship between drivers, vehicles and public infrastructure.
