Nantes fire destroys Roma camp as firefighters contain blaze near city outskirts

A major fire broke out Wednesday evening at a Roma settlement in Saint-Herblain, near Nantes, destroying several caravans and vehicles before firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control.

The incident, which occurred on the western outskirts of the Nantes metropolitan area, was reported at around 7 p.m. Emergency crews extinguished the flames shortly before 8:45 p.m., following an operation involving 112 firefighters. The fire affected approximately eight hectares of land and caused significant damage within the camp.

According to initial reports, eight caravans and twelve vehicles were destroyed in the blaze. No information was immediately provided on possible casualties or injuries among residents of the settlement.

Rapid emergency response

Firefighters from Nantes and surrounding areas intervened quickly to prevent the flames from spreading further, particularly given the presence of vehicles and temporary structures that increased the risk of rapid fire expansion.

The intervention comes after several recent fires affecting areas around Nantes, raising renewed concerns about safety conditions in informal settlements and the challenges faced by emergency services when responding to fires in densely occupied makeshift camps.

Authorities investigate circumstances

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the outbreak as part of their investigation.

Local officials and emergency services continue to monitor the situation while assessing the needs of residents affected by the destruction of their temporary housing and personal belongings.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges linked to informal settlements on the outskirts of French cities, where issues including access to services, safety standards and emergency preparedness remain major concerns.
