Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 5,398 as humanitarian crisis deepens
The humanitarian impact of the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month continues to worsen, with authorities reporting that the confirmed death toll has climbed to 5,398, making the disaster one of the deadliest in the country's modern history.
The updated figures reflect the ongoing recovery effort as rescue teams, emergency services and government agencies continue to assess the full scale of the destruction caused by the twin earthquakes that hit northern Venezuela on June 24.
Casualty figures continue to increase
According to the latest official update, the number of confirmed fatalities has risen from the previous day's count as identification efforts and searches continue in the affected areas.
The two earthquakes, measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, caused extensive structural damage across several regions, with the most severe destruction reported in the coastal state of La Guaira and parts of the capital, Caracas, where numerous residential and commercial buildings collapsed.
Thousands injured and displaced
Authorities said 16,740 people have been injured since the disaster, while 17,265 residents have lost their homes.
An additional 23,122 people remain sheltered in temporary emergency camps established to provide accommodation, food and essential services for displaced families as recovery operations continue.
Long-term recovery challenge
Nearly a month after the earthquakes, emergency efforts have increasingly shifted from immediate rescue operations toward humanitarian assistance and reconstruction planning.
The scale of the damage has placed considerable pressure on housing, healthcare and public infrastructure, creating significant challenges for authorities responsible for rebuilding affected communities.
Focus turns to reconstruction
Government agencies continue to monitor conditions in the hardest-hit regions while coordinating relief efforts for survivors.
As damage assessments progress, the priority is expected to move toward restoring critical infrastructure and supporting thousands of families displaced by one of the most destructive seismic events to strike Venezuela in recent decades.
