Airbus plans to expand its aviation activities in Morocco

Airbus is considering expanding its industrial and aviation activities in Morocco, highlighting the country's growing aerospace capabilities and its increasingly mature industrial ecosystem.

Speaking during the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom, Gabriel Semelas, Airbus President for Africa and the Middle East, said the group was examining new opportunities to strengthen its operations in Morocco. The company's acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems is also expected to create new possibilities for expanding Morocco's role in global aerospace supply chains.

Airbus is also looking to develop its helicopter-related activities in the country. The group is considering the establishment of a regional center dedicated to maintenance, repair, training and operations. The facility could serve both the Moroccan market and other African markets, further strengthening the kingdom's position as a regional hub for aviation services.

Semelas described Morocco as an important part of Airbus' long-term strategy, noting the company's long-standing presence in the country. Airbus considers Morocco a key partner due to its political and economic stability, investment environment and industrial development strategy.

The Airbus executive also praised Morocco's skilled workforce and the contribution of universities and specialized training institutions to the development of qualified professionals for the aerospace sector. The country's geographical proximity to major international markets has also helped attract long-term industrial investment.

Airbus currently employs around 1,300 people in Morocco and works with approximately 100 local suppliers, contributing to the creation of nearly 1,000 indirect jobs. The company has also increasingly integrated Moroccan-made components into its commercial aircraft production, reflecting the country's growing participation in international aerospace supply chains.

Morocco's aerospace industry has expanded significantly in recent years. The sector now includes more than 155 companies and provides over 25,000 direct jobs, while annual exports exceed $3 billion. With local integration estimated at around 42% and average annual growth of approximately 17%, the industry is strengthening Morocco's position as one of Africa's leading aerospace manufacturing and services hubs.

The potential expansion of Airbus operations could further support the development of Morocco's aviation ecosystem, attract new investment and create additional opportunities for local suppliers and skilled workers.
