Europe’s top five football leagues prepare for the 2026-2027 season
Football fans will not have to wait long for the return of European club football after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The continent's five leading domestic leagues are scheduled to resume between mid and late August, giving players a limited recovery period before the new campaign begins.
The 2026-2027 season will see the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 return to action within a two-week period. The schedule is expected to present an early challenge for clubs whose players were involved in the latter stages of the World Cup.
La Liga to return first
Spain's La Liga is scheduled to be the first of Europe's major leagues to begin its new season, with the opening fixtures set for August 15.
Several of the country's biggest clubs may have their opening matches adjusted to provide additional recovery time for players who took part in the final stages of the World Cup. Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid are among the teams expected to benefit from a more flexible start to the campaign.
Premier League begins on August 21
The English Premier League is due to kick off on August 21, with the new season expected to feature another intense battle for the title and European qualification places.
Defending champions Arsenal are scheduled to begin their campaign at home against newly promoted Coventry City, while Manchester City are set to travel to Bournemouth. Other notable opening fixtures include Liverpool against Newcastle United and Chelsea facing Fulham.
The season is expected to conclude in May 2027, with the competition once again attracting global attention.
Ligue 1 returns alongside the Premier League
France's Ligue 1 is also scheduled to resume on August 21. Marseille are expected to host Strasbourg in the opening fixture of the campaign.
Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain are set to begin their title defense later in the opening round, with the Parisian club once again expected to be among the leading contenders for domestic honors.
Serie A starts on August 22
Italy's Serie A will follow on August 22, launching another season of competition for the Scudetto.
Inter Milan, the defending champions, are scheduled to begin their title defense against Monza at San Siro. Juventus, AC Milan, Napoli, and Roma are also expected to challenge for the championship in what could be another closely contested season.
The Italian campaign is scheduled to run until May 29, 2027.
Bundesliga closes the summer return
Germany's Bundesliga will be the final member of Europe's top five leagues to begin its new campaign, with the opening match scheduled for August 28.
As tradition dictates, reigning champions Bayern Munich are expected to open the season at home, with Stuttgart set to visit the Allianz Arena. The German league campaign is scheduled to conclude on May 22, 2027.
A new season after the World Cup
The return of Europe's major leagues will mark the transition from international competition to the demanding club football calendar. With World Cup players facing a tight turnaround, clubs will have to carefully manage their squads during the opening weeks of the season.
New signings, emerging talents, managerial changes, and renewed title rivalries are expected to shape the 2026-2027 campaign. From England and Spain to Italy, Germany, and France, European football is set for another season of intense competition.
