China expands tariff-free market access to 63 countries

China is expanding its trade-opening strategy by extending tariff-free access to its domestic market to a total of 63 countries. The move is part of Beijing's broader efforts to strengthen international trade, diversify its commercial partnerships, and reinforce its position in the global economy.

Alongside reducing tariff barriers, Chinese authorities are working to simplify customs procedures and make it easier for foreign exporters to access the country's vast consumer market. The approach is designed to facilitate cross-border trade while improving the efficiency of international supply chains.

A new phase of economic opening

According to China's customs authorities, the latest initiative forms part of a broader program covering the 2026-2030 period. The strategy aims to promote a higher level of economic openness by creating more opportunities for international businesses and expanding access to global markets.

Beijing also intends to strengthen its integration into global value chains by streamlining trade procedures and deepening commercial cooperation with partner economies.

Africa remains a key priority

The latest decision comes several weeks after China introduced preferential trade arrangements for 53 African countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing.

The scheme is intended to facilitate African exports to the Chinese market and strengthen economic ties between China and the continent. Beijing has increasingly sought to expand trade relations with emerging and developing economies as part of its wider international commercial strategy.

Trade between China and African countries has shown strong momentum. During the first half of 2026, bilateral trade reportedly increased by 19.6% compared with the same period a year earlier, reflecting growing economic exchanges between the two sides.

Customs procedures undergo modernization

China's trade-opening policy is also accompanied by efforts to modernize its customs administration. Authorities have strengthened risk-management systems, simplified market-access procedures, and developed "green corridors" designed to speed up the processing of agricultural and food products.

These measures aim to reduce customs clearance times while maintaining safety and regulatory standards for international trade.

Looking toward 2030

China plans to continue improving its trade facilitation measures through 2030. Key priorities include greater harmonization of customs procedures, closer alignment of sanitary and phytosanitary standards, and improvements to rules of origin governing international trade.

Through these initiatives, Beijing is seeking to strengthen its attractiveness as a global trading hub while expanding economic partnerships with emerging markets and developing economies.

The broader strategy reflects China's efforts to maintain strong international trade links at a time when global commerce is facing geopolitical tensions, shifting supply chains, and growing uncertainty over trade policies. By reducing tariff barriers and simplifying customs procedures, Beijing hopes to encourage greater market access and reinforce its role in the global trading system.
