European Union warns that artificial intelligence is becoming a geopolitical tool

The European Union is calling for faster investment in homegrown artificial intelligence technologies, warning that control over advanced AI systems is becoming a strategic factor in global power relations rather than simply an economic issue.

European officials have urged the bloc to reduce its reliance on AI models developed by foreign technology companies and accelerate efforts to build stronger domestic capabilities. The warning reflects growing concerns that access to advanced AI systems could become a source of political and economic influence.

According to EU technology officials, artificial intelligence is increasingly taking on a geopolitical dimension. Countries and companies capable of developing and controlling the most advanced models could gain significant influence over critical technologies, digital infrastructure and economic activity.

The European Commission has expressed concern that excessive dependence on external providers could leave Europe vulnerable if access to essential AI technologies were restricted or used as leverage in international disputes.

For Europe, the challenge will be to turn its ambitions into concrete technological capacity. Building competitive AI models and infrastructure will require significant investment, skilled talent and closer cooperation between governments, universities and the private sector.

As the global AI race accelerates, the European Union is signaling that technological independence has become an increasingly important part of its long-term geopolitical strategy.
