Morocco advances air defense capabilities with successful Viper Shield test flight
L3Harris Technologies has achieved a significant milestone in military aviation technology with the inaugural flight test of its Viper Shield electronic warfare system, designed for Morocco's F-16 Block 70 aircraft. The test, conducted at Edwards Air Force Base in California, demonstrated the system's integration with critical onboard components, including the APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array radar.
The successful flight test follows the U.S. Department of Defense's July 2023 authorization for Lockheed Martin to commence production of the Viper Shield system for Morocco's modernized F-16 fleet. Ed Zoiss, President of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris Technologies, confirmed that system deliveries are scheduled to begin by late 2025.
Designed as a cost-effective defensive solution, the Viper Shield system creates an electronic protective barrier around the aircraft by rapidly identifying and countering enemy targeting systems. This advanced technology enables pilots to navigate complex combat environments with enhanced safety and mission effectiveness.
The system's deployment extends beyond Morocco, with several international partners, including Taiwan, Bahrain, Bulgaria, and Slovakia, set to integrate Viper Shield into their F-16 Block 70/72 aircraft. This widespread adoption was highlighted during the Dubai Airshow in November 2023.
The integration of Viper Shield represents a significant enhancement to Morocco's air defense capabilities, particularly in strengthening the defensive systems of its F-16 fleet. As the only fully funded and actively produced advanced electronic warfare solution for international F-16 partners, this system positions Morocco among nations employing cutting-edge military aviation technology.
