Moroccan navy intercepts 189 irregular migrants heading toward the Canary Islands
Units of the Royal Moroccan Navy intercepted a boat carrying 189 irregular migrants off the coast of Dakhla on Monday, as they attempted to reach the Canary Islands, according to an official military statement.
The vessel, described as a small fishing boat, was stopped during a maritime patrol operation in southern Moroccan waters. Authorities said the passengers were nationals from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa who were seeking to undertake the dangerous Atlantic crossing toward Spain.
Some of the migrants required medical attention and received first aid on board before being transported safely to the port of Dakhla. Upon arrival, they were handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie for standard administrative and legal procedures.
The interception highlights the continued pressure along West African migration routes, particularly toward the Canary Islands, which have become a key entry point into Europe in recent years. Moroccan security forces regularly conduct patrols to combat human smuggling networks and prevent unsafe sea crossings.
Officials reiterated the country’s commitment to maritime surveillance and regional cooperation to address irregular migration while ensuring humanitarian assistance to those rescued at sea.
