Greece battles new wildfire near Athens as strong winds fuel flames
A new forest fire broke out southeast of Athens on Monday, prompting a large emergency response as powerful winds complicated efforts to contain the flames in the Attica region.
The blaze was reported near Kouvaras, around 60 kilometers southeast of the Greek capital. Firefighters said winds exceeding 70 km/h were fanning the flames and increasing the risk of rapid spread.
At least 172 firefighters and around 40 vehicles were deployed to the area, according to the fire service. Two water-bombing aircraft and four helicopters were also taking part in the operation.
The latest fire comes after a series of wildfires that have affected parts of Greece in recent days, highlighting the continuing risks posed by hot, dry conditions and strong winds during the summer fire season.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as emergency teams work to prevent the flames from reaching populated areas. The scale of the response reflects the persistent threat posed by wildfires around the Attica region, where previous fires have caused extensive damage and forced evacuations.
Weather conditions remain a major concern for firefighters, with strong winds capable of accelerating the spread of flames and making aerial and ground operations more difficult.
