Estonia government loses parliamentary majority after two MPs defect
Estonia's coalition government has lost its parliamentary majority after two lawmakers left their respective parties, leaving Prime Minister Kristen Michal's administration with a more fragile position in the 101-seat Riigikogu.
The departures were reported on Monday by Estonian media, including Postimees and public broadcaster ERR.
Two MPs leave coalition parties
Kalev Stoicescu, a lawmaker from Estonia 200, announced on Sunday that he was leaving the party.
A second coalition member, Meelis Kiili, said on Monday that he had left the Reform Party.
The two defections reduce the government's parliamentary support to 50 seats, one short of the 51 needed for a majority in the 101-member Riigikogu.
Coalition faces a new political challenge
The loss of its majority does not automatically bring down Michal's government, but it leaves the coalition more dependent on support beyond its core parliamentary ranks when seeking to pass legislation.
The development also introduces greater uncertainty for the government's ability to maintain a stable legislative agenda, particularly on measures requiring firm parliamentary backing.
The defections come as Estonia's governing parties seek to preserve political stability in a country facing heightened security concerns because of the wider European geopolitical environment.
For Michal, the immediate challenge will be to maintain sufficient parliamentary support while managing the consequences of the two lawmakers' departures.
