Ireland charges alleged Kinahan cartel leader after extradition from Dubai
Irish authorities have charged and remanded Daniel Kinahan, the alleged leader of the powerful Kinahan cartel, following his extradition from Dubai, where he had been arrested five months earlier.
Kinahan, who is accused of being a leading figure in a criminal network involved in drug trafficking across Europe, appeared before Ireland’s Special Criminal Court on Sunday following his return to the country.
Kinahan transferred to high-security prison
The hearing lasted only a few minutes before Kinahan was taken into custody and transferred to Portlaoise Prison, a high-security facility in central Ireland that holds some of the country’s most prominent detainees.
His extradition marks a major development in a case that has attracted international attention and involved law-enforcement authorities in several countries.
Kinahan had left Spain roughly a decade ago and subsequently established himself in Dubai. He was arrested in the emirate five months ago before being extradited to Ireland aboard a government aircraft.
A major figure in European organised crime
Irish authorities consider the Kinahan cartel a major player in the European narcotics trade. The organisation has also been the subject of investigations and sanctions efforts outside Ireland, including in the United States.
Kinahan has long been identified by law-enforcement agencies as a senior figure within the criminal network. The latest proceedings now bring the case directly before the Irish courts.
His detention in Portlaoise is expected to precede further judicial proceedings as prosecutors pursue the allegations against him.
