Belgium braces for its third heatwave of summer 2026

Belgium is preparing for another period of exceptionally warm weather, with forecasters warning that a third heatwave could affect the country this summer as temperatures are expected to rise again in the coming days.

The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium has issued a heatwave warning covering the period from August 9 to 14, while health authorities have maintained their alert measures amid concerns about the potential impact of prolonged high temperatures.

Temperatures were already close to or slightly above 30 degrees Celsius in several parts of the country on Sunday. Meteorologists expect the heat to intensify from Wednesday, with temperatures likely to exceed 30 degrees in a number of regions and reach around 34 degrees locally on Thursday.

If the required meteorological conditions are met, the episode would officially become Belgium’s third heatwave of the summer. Under the country’s criteria, a heatwave is declared when the reference weather station in Uccle records maximum temperatures of at least 25 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days, including at least three days at 30 degrees or higher.

The expected heatwave follows an already unusually warm summer, with Belgium experiencing an earlier heatwave in June. The repeated episodes highlight the increasing frequency of periods of extreme heat across parts of Europe.

Authorities are urging residents to take precautions, particularly older people, children and individuals considered more vulnerable to high temperatures. Health officials recommend drinking enough water, limiting prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.

The renewed heat also places additional pressure on health services and raises concerns about dehydration and other heat-related health problems. Residents are therefore being encouraged to follow official weather and health guidance as temperatures climb.
