In a bold move, Spanish authorities have imposed fines totaling over 150 million euros on four low-cost airlines for charging passengers for hand baggage, consumer associations announced on Friday.

Ryanair, Vueling, EasyJet, and Volotea were also sanctioned for charging fees for seat selection when passengers travel with dependents, such as disabled individuals or children, or for prohibiting cash payments for ticket purchases at airports, according to a statement from FACUA, one of the associations that filed complaints against the airlines' practices.

"It has taken almost six years for us to fight and finally get the authorities to act against airline practices that illegally inflate their profits," said Rubén Sánchez, FACUA's general secretary, expressing satisfaction with the outcome.

The total amount of fines exceeds 150 million euros, with some airlines expected to pay more than others, according to the association.

Sources within the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, which imposed the sanctions, confirmed to the press that an investigation was launched a year ago concerning "four low-cost airlines" and that it resulted in penalties.

The Airlines Association (ALA) denounced the decision as "absolutely disproportionate" during a press conference, indicating that an appeal will be filed against the ruling.

As the aviation industry grapples with the aftermath of the pandemic, this crackdown by Spanish authorities marks a significant shift in the landscape. The fines serve as a stern reminder that consumer rights and fair practices must take precedence over profit-driven strategies that unfairly burden travelers.

While the airlines may contest the decision, the move by Madrid sends a clear message that the era of nickel-and-diming passengers for basic services like hand baggage is no longer acceptable. As the industry evolves, striking the right balance between affordability and transparency will be crucial for low-cost carriers to maintain customer trust and loyalty.

The ripple effects of this decision are likely to reverberate beyond Spain's borders, as consumer advocates and regulatory bodies in other countries closely observe the outcome. It remains to be seen whether this crackdown will inspire similar actions elsewhere or prompt airlines to preemptively reevaluate their pricing models and policies.
