Kostyuk wins Roland Garros match amid Kyiv missile strike tension
Marta Kostyuk advanced to the second round at Roland Garros after defeating Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-2, 6-3 in a first-round match played under heavy emotional strain. The Ukrainian player extended her strong clay-court run this season, but the result came in the shadow of urgent news from her home country.
Shortly before stepping on court, Kostyuk learned that a missile strike in Kyiv had destroyed a residential building located about 100 meters from her parents’ home. The attack formed part of a wider wave of missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital early on Sunday, which hit multiple districts and caused damage to residential infrastructure. Local authorities reported injuries and fires across several locations in the city.
During her on-court interview, Kostyuk described the mental pressure she carried into the match. She said she struggled to focus after receiving the news from Kyiv and admitted she did not know how she managed to compete. Despite the circumstances, she controlled the match against her opponent and continued her strong run on clay this season.
Kostyuk has been one of the most visible Ukrainian athletes on the professional circuit since the start of the war in 2022. She arrived in Paris in strong form after winning titles on clay earlier in the season. Her opponent, originally born in Russia, competed under a different sporting nationality after switching representation before the tournament.
