Venezuela expels Maduro Ally Alex Saab to the United States
The government of Venezuela has announced the expulsion of businessman Alex Saab to the United States, according to an official statement released by migration authorities.
Saab, a close ally of President Nicolás Maduro, has long been considered a key intermediary in Venezuela’s international trade operations, particularly during years of economic sanctions imposed on the country.
Authorities stated that the decision was taken because Saab is wanted in the United States for alleged involvement in financial crimes, including money laundering and corruption linked to food import programs.
He had previously been arrested in 2020 during a stopover in Cape Verde and later extradited to the United States in 2021. In 2023, he was released in a prisoner exchange agreement between Caracas and Washington, before reappearing in Venezuela under controversial circumstances.
The latest expulsion highlights ongoing political tensions between Venezuela and the United States, as well as internal restructuring within the Venezuelan government amid shifting power dynamics.
Observers note that Saab’s role had been central to Venezuela’s sanctioned trade networks, particularly in the importation of subsidized food supplies, a system that has faced repeated allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
