Senegal faces political uncertainty after resignation of National Assembly speaker
El Malick Ndiaye, President of the National Assembly in Senegal, announced his resignation on Sunday, only days after the dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The political developments have increased uncertainty in the country and raised questions about the future stability of the government.
In a statement shared on social media, Ndiaye explained that his resignation was motivated by his vision of public responsibility and respect for national institutions. However, he did not provide further details about the exact reasons behind his decision.
Ndiaye, a close ally of Sonko, became head of the National Assembly after the decisive parliamentary victory of the Pastef party in 2024. The party secured a strong majority, strengthening Sonko’s influence within Senegalese politics.
The resignation has fueled speculation that Ousmane Sonko could seek the presidency of the National Assembly, further consolidating his political role despite his recent removal from the government.
The tensions between President Faye and Sonko had reportedly been growing for several months. Both leaders came to power in 2024 with significant public support, especially among young voters who hoped for economic reforms, stronger governance, and political change.
Sonko, known for his pan-Africanist discourse and popularity among Senegalese youth, played a major role in President Faye’s rise to power. During the presidential campaign, supporters frequently used the slogan “Diomaye is Sonko,” highlighting the close alliance between the two men at the time.
Their political partnership began to weaken amid disagreements over governance and leadership. The latest developments now raise concerns about the government’s ability to maintain unity and implement reforms while the country faces economic and social challenges.
Political observers believe the coming weeks could be decisive for Senegal’s institutional stability and for the future direction of the ruling coalition.
