Greek police arrest 20 in Crete over suspected EU farm subsidies fraud
Greek police have arrested 20 people on the island of Crete as part of an investigation into an alleged fraud scheme involving European Union agricultural subsidies.
Authorities say they dismantled a criminal network suspected of illegally obtaining EU farming funds through false declarations of agricultural land. The alleged fraud is estimated to have generated more than €3 million since 2019.
According to police officials, the group included two accountants and public sector employees who are believed to have helped farmers submit fraudulent applications for EU subsidies. These applications reportedly contained inaccurate or falsified information about farmland eligibility.
The case is part of a broader scandal involving misuse of EU agricultural funds, which has triggered political concern in Greece and placed pressure on government institutions responsible for managing rural development programs.
Officials say investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are not ruled out as authorities examine additional evidence linked to subsidy fraud networks operating in different regions.
