Latvia’s Kulbergs moves to form four-party coalition government
Opposition lawmaker Andris Kulbergs has announced plans to form a four-party coalition government in Latvia following the collapse of the previous ruling alliance earlier this month.
Kulbergs, a member of the United List party, stated that discussions are underway with several political groups aimed at building a new governing majority. However, he noted that no formal coalition agreement has yet been signed.
The political developments come after the resignation of the previous government, which led Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics to propose Kulbergs as a candidate for prime minister. The move marks a significant shift in Latvia’s political landscape as parties attempt to restore stability in parliament.
Coalition negotiations in Latvia often involve multiple parties due to the country’s proportional representation system, which rarely produces single-party majorities. As a result, government formation typically requires extensive negotiations and compromises between political factions.
The proposed four-party alliance is expected to focus on economic stability, national security, and continued alignment with European Union and NATO priorities. Latvia, as a member of both organizations, has emphasized strong defense cooperation, particularly in response to regional security concerns.
Political analysts note that the success of Kulbergs’ initiative will depend on the ability of participating parties to agree on policy priorities and leadership roles. Disagreements during coalition talks have previously led to prolonged periods of political uncertainty in the country.
The coming days are expected to be decisive as negotiations continue, with observers closely watching whether Kulbergs can secure enough support to form a stable government.
