Global tensions overshadow Singapore’s major defence summit
Rising geopolitical tensions and ongoing conflicts are expected to dominate discussions at this year’s Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, one of Asia’s most influential defence and security forums.
The annual summit, organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, will take place from May 29 to 31 and gather defence ministers, military leaders, diplomats, intelligence officials, analysts, and representatives from the global arms industry.
This year’s edition comes at a particularly sensitive moment for international relations, with the conflict involving Iran, growing uncertainty regarding U.S. strategic commitments in Asia, and renewed tensions surrounding Taiwan expected to shape many of the discussions behind closed doors.
The keynote speech will be delivered by To Lam, President of Vietnam, reflecting Southeast Asia’s increasing diplomatic and strategic importance in global affairs.
However, much of the attention will focus on U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is expected to face questions regarding Washington’s approach to the conflict with Iran and America’s broader role in the Indo-Pacific region.
Recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that negotiations aimed at ending the conflict with Iran may take longer than anticipated. The White House has also maintained strong pressure on Tehran through continued maritime restrictions near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy trade routes.
The Strait of Hormuz remains strategically critical because a large portion of global oil and gas shipments passes through the narrow waterway. Any prolonged disruption could have serious consequences for energy markets and global trade.
The summit is also expected to address security concerns in the Asia-Pacific region, including military activity around Taiwan and the evolving balance of power between the United States and China. Chinese participation at the forum has not yet been officially confirmed, adding further uncertainty to the event.
Analysts believe the Shangri-La Dialogue will provide important indications about future diplomatic alignments, defence priorities, and the willingness of major powers to cooperate during a period of growing international instability.
