FIFA allows Iran to establish World Cup base camp in Mexico
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has approved Iran’s request to relocate its official base camp for the upcoming 2026 World Cup to Mexico, amid changing geopolitical and logistical circumstances.
Iran had initially planned to base its team in Tucson, in the United States, as part of its tournament preparations. However, the decision was revised following increased tensions between the United States and Iran earlier in the year, prompting Iranian officials to seek an alternative location.
The new arrangement will see the Iranian national team based in Tijuana, a city in northern Mexico located near the Pacific coast. The change is expected to provide a more stable and suitable environment for training and team preparation ahead of the tournament.
Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj confirmed the decision, stating that discussions with FIFA officials had resulted in approval of the request. He emphasized that the federation was satisfied with the outcome and ready to proceed with preparations in the new location.
The FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, is expected to be one of the largest editions of the tournament, featuring an expanded format and increased global participation. Adjustments to team logistics and base camp locations remain ongoing as federations finalize their preparations.
