Kuwait mistakenly shoots down three US fighter jets during regional escalation
Three United States fighter jets that crashed in Kuwait were accidentally shot down by Kuwaiti air defense systems amid a wave of regional attacks, according to the US Central Command.
The announcement was made by United States Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations across the Middle East. In a statement released on Monday, the command said the incident occurred during an intense confrontation involving Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles and drones targeting parts of the Gulf region.
According to CENTCOM, Kuwaiti air defenses mistakenly engaged the US aircraft while responding to the broader aerial threat. All six crew members aboard the three fighter jets successfully ejected and were reported safe. No fatalities or serious injuries were announced in the immediate aftermath.
Kuwaiti authorities acknowledged the incident, US officials said, describing it as a case of friendly fire under high-pressure combat conditions. CENTCOM expressed appreciation for Kuwait’s cooperation and ongoing support in the current military operation linked to escalating tensions with Iran.
The Gulf state of Kuwait hosts US military personnel and has long been considered a strategic partner of United States in regional security matters. Analysts note that fast-moving aerial threats, including missiles and drones, increase the risk of misidentification, particularly during complex, multi-front engagements.
The episode highlights the volatility of the current security environment in the Gulf, where overlapping defense systems and rapid response measures can lead to unintended consequences despite close coordination among allied forces.
