Kabul bombing suspect arrested: A turning point in US-Pakistan relations
US President Donald Trump announced in a speech to Congress that an Afghan national, allegedly linked to the deadly Kabul airport bombing in August 2021, had been captured with Pakistan's assistance. The attack, which took place as the US was evacuating its forces following the Taliban's takeover, killed nearly 200 people, including 13 American soldiers. Trump praised Pakistan's role in apprehending the suspect, Mohammad Sharifullah, an ISIL (ISIS) commander, highlighting the importance of continued cooperation between the two nations in counterterrorism efforts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan confirmed the arrest, calling it a significant step in the fight against terrorism. He emphasized that Pakistan has consistently worked to prevent militant groups from operating on its soil and has cooperated with the US in counterterrorism initiatives. The operation that led to Sharifullah's capture was carried out by Pakistani security forces in the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The arrest of Sharifullah, whose organization was linked to attacks in Pakistan, is seen as a positive development in Pakistan-US relations, despite the region's shifting political landscape. Although relations between the US and Pakistan have cooled in recent years, experts believe that military-to-military cooperation remains strong, and this event could be an opportunity to reset and redefine their bilateral ties.
