India: Nine Dead in Hotel Fire in Kolkata
A deadly fire ravaged a hotel in Kolkata, eastern India, leaving at least nine dead and several injured, according to officials cited by local media on Wednesday.
The blaze broke out in the early hours of the morning while around 60 guests were still inside the establishment. Thick smoke quickly spread through various parts of the hotel, complicating the evacuation of occupants.
The fire services director, Anuj Sharma, confirmed the death toll of nine victims, including one child.
Victims Found in Bathrooms
Rescue operations managed to evacuate several people trapped by the flames and smoke. Six men, two women, and one child were rescued and transported to a hospital for treatment.
Some of the deceased were found in the hotel's bathrooms. According to initial information provided by the authorities, several occupants had sought refuge in these spaces as smoke gradually filled the building.
The exact circumstances of the victims' deaths remain to be established as the investigation progresses.
Air Conditioner Explosion Among Initial Hypotheses
Initial findings gathered by the authorities point investigations towards a possible incident related to an air conditioner. An explosion of the device could be the cause of the fire outbreak, although this lead still needs to be confirmed by investigators.
An investigation should also determine the precise circumstances of the fire's ignition, its speed of spread, and any failures that may have complicated the evacuation.
Difficult Evacuation Conditions
The presence of a significant amount of smoke made operations particularly delicate for rescue teams. Firefighters had to act quickly to locate people still present in the establishment and guide them out of the affected area.
The human toll could still evolve as authorities continue verification operations and assess the consequences of the fire.
This tragedy also raises questions about safety conditions in public establishments, particularly regarding fire prevention, emergency evacuation, and maintenance of electrical and air conditioning equipment.
