Trump calls Mecca mutual defense agreement a bold and significant step

U.S. President Donald Trump has welcomed the recently signed Mecca Mutual Defense Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, describing the pact as a major development in regional security cooperation.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he was pleased to see Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan formalize the agreement. He characterized the move as a “big, bold and very important” step and argued that it reflected a broader trend toward greater cooperation among countries in the Middle East.

The agreement was signed in Mecca on August 7 by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The three countries presented the arrangement as a framework for strengthening defense cooperation while emphasizing that it is not directed against any specific country.

The pact is intended to deepen coordination on regional security and reinforce the principle of collective deterrence. One of its central provisions states that an armed attack against any of the three participating countries would be regarded as an attack against all of them.

The agreement also emphasizes burden-sharing and a common understanding of security, with the stated objective of contributing to peace, stability and prosperity at both the regional and international levels.

Trump’s reaction highlights the growing importance of security partnerships involving major regional powers. Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan each have significant military and geopolitical influence, and closer coordination could give the three countries a stronger collective role in addressing emerging security challenges.

The agreement comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions across the Middle East and surrounding regions. Its implementation could therefore become an important test of how far the three partners are prepared to translate their political commitments into practical military and security cooperation.

For Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, the pact represents an effort to strengthen strategic coordination and develop greater capacity for collective defense. For Washington, Trump’s positive response signals recognition of a regional approach in which Middle Eastern and neighboring powers assume a greater role in their own security.
