North Korea: Kim Yo Jong denies knowledge of any exchanges between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump

A potential communication channel between Pyongyang and Washington remains shrouded in uncertainty. Kim Yo Jong, sister and close advisor to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, stated on Wednesday that she was unaware of any recent contacts between her brother and U.S. President Donald Trump.

A statement that adds to the ambiguity

Kim Yo Jong's clarification comes after comments attributed to Donald Trump, who suggested that he maintained contact with the North Korean leader.

When asked about this information, the North Korean official asserted that she was not informed of such exchanges. This statement is particularly noteworthy given her role within the power structure of Pyongyang and her regular involvement in foreign policy matters.

However, this claimed lack of information does not allow for a determination of whether no contact has taken place or if any communications between the two leaders are simply kept at an extremely confidential level.

Kim Yo Jong, an important voice in the regime

Kim Yo Jong holds an influential position in the North Korean political apparatus. Regularly engaged in diplomatic and military issues, she frequently intervenes to convey Pyongyang's official positions.

Her statements are therefore particularly closely followed when they concern relations with the United States. North Korea continues to defend its nuclear program and rejects international calls for denuclearization.

In this context, any potential resumption of direct contacts between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump could have significant diplomatic implications.

Trump mentions contact without specifying its nature

The U.S. President's remarks have reignited speculation about the existence of a direct channel with Pyongyang. However, no specific details have been provided regarding the nature, frequency, or content of these potential exchanges.

Kim Yo Jong's statement thus adds another layer of uncertainty. It may also reflect the highly restricted nature of the informed circle regarding diplomatic exchanges at the top of the North Korean state.

For both Washington and Pyongyang, the issue of direct contacts remains particularly sensitive following previous diplomatic initiatives between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

A relationship still marked by tensions

Despite the possibilities for dialogue, relations between the two countries remain dominated by nuclear and ballistic issues. Pyongyang continues to develop its military capabilities while Washington maintains pressure for a reduction in North Korea's nuclear capabilities.

Kim Yo Jong's statement does not, in itself, confirm a new diplomatic phase. It primarily shows that the information circulating in Washington is not necessarily confirmed by the most visible North Korean officials.

At this stage, the existence and nature of any recent communications between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump thus remain difficult to publicly establish.
