Scabies outbreak reported among Spanish troops in Ceuta amid migration tensions

A scabies outbreak has been reported among Spanish military personnel stationed in Ceuta, with at least 14 soldiers confirmed to have contracted the contagious skin condition, according to Spanish media reports.

The cases emerged amid heightened pressure on the Spanish enclave following a recent increase in irregular migration. However, Spain’s Ministry of Defence has rejected any direct link between the reported infections and the current migration situation.

According to reports by Spanish newspapers, several soldiers were housed in facilities that are not normally used for military accommodation. Questions have subsequently been raised about sanitary conditions and hygiene standards in those premises.

Scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by microscopic mites that can spread through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and, in some circumstances, through shared clothing or bedding. Outbreaks can occur in crowded environments where access to adequate hygiene and medical care is limited.

The reported cases come after Ceuta experienced a significant increase in migrant arrivals in late July. The situation prompted Spanish authorities to reinforce security measures in the autonomous city, including the deployment of additional police, Civil Guard personnel and military units.

Ceuta, located on Morocco’s northern border, is one of Spain’s two autonomous cities in North Africa and has long been a focal point in debates over migration and border security.

Spanish authorities have nevertheless stressed that the military scabies cases should not automatically be attributed to migrants or to the migration crisis. Establishing the source of an infectious outbreak requires medical and epidemiological assessment rather than assumptions based on the surrounding circumstances.

The incident has nevertheless renewed attention to hygiene and accommodation conditions for personnel working in high-pressure environments. Maintaining adequate sanitation, early medical detection and appropriate isolation measures are considered important to prevent contagious skin conditions from spreading within military units.

The situation also highlights the broader health challenges that can emerge during periods of intense migration, particularly when large numbers of people are temporarily accommodated in confined facilities. Health authorities generally focus on surveillance, access to healthcare and adequate sanitation to limit the transmission of communicable diseases.

For the Spanish authorities, the priority remains managing the border situation while ensuring appropriate health measures for both security personnel and people arriving in Ceuta.
