OpenAI strengthens ChatGPT safety measures for teenage users
OpenAI is expanding its safety measures for teenagers using ChatGPT, seeking to provide a more age-appropriate experience while allowing younger users to benefit from artificial intelligence for learning, creativity and everyday tasks.
The company’s approach relies increasingly on age prediction technology designed to determine whether an account is likely to belong to someone under 18. When the system identifies a possible teenage user, ChatGPT can automatically apply additional safeguards, even if the age information originally provided during registration indicates otherwise.
The enhanced protections are designed to reduce teenagers’ exposure to sensitive or potentially inappropriate material. These include graphic violence, risky online challenges, sexual or violent role-play, self-harm-related content and material promoting extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting or body shaming.
OpenAI says the objective is not to prevent teenagers from using ChatGPT, but to adapt the service to their age and developmental needs. The company has emphasized the role of AI in education and productivity, noting that many young users already rely on the technology for learning, information and skill development.
The age-detection system evaluates a combination of account and usage signals, including patterns of activity, how long an account has existed and the age declared by the user. When the system is uncertain, OpenAI says it may favor the more protective under-18 experience. Adults who are incorrectly classified can verify their age to have the additional teen protections removed.
The company has also developed parental controls that allow parents or guardians with linked teen accounts to manage selected aspects of the ChatGPT experience. These controls can include features such as quiet hours, certain model settings and safety notifications.
OpenAI’s move reflects a broader debate over how generative artificial intelligence should be used by minors. As AI tools become increasingly integrated into education, communication and entertainment, technology companies are facing growing pressure to distinguish between adult and teenage experiences while protecting younger users from inappropriate interactions.
The company has previously established principles specifically for users aged 13 to 17, emphasizing prevention, transparency and support for real-world relationships. These principles are intended to ensure that ChatGPT treats teenagers differently from adults while avoiding a condescending approach to younger users.
ChatGPT is not intended for children under 13, while users aged 13 to 18 are subject to additional requirements and protections. OpenAI continues to refine its age-prediction systems as the technology develops, acknowledging that no automated system can determine age with complete accuracy.
The latest measures underline the growing importance of safety and age-appropriate design as artificial intelligence becomes more widely used by younger generations. For OpenAI, the challenge will be to balance access to educational and creative AI tools with stronger protections for users who may be more vulnerable to harmful or inappropriate content.
