Italy should reconsider nuclear power, says IEA chief
Italy should reconsider its long-standing opposition to nuclear energy in order to strengthen its energy security and improve economic stability, according to the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Italy currently has no active nuclear power plants and depends heavily on energy imports, including electricity generated from nuclear sources in neighboring countries such as France. Nuclear energy was banned following referendums held in 1987 and 2011, although recent discussions within the Italian government suggest a possible review of that position, particularly in light of new nuclear technologies.
IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stated in an interview that Italy, while making progress in renewable energy development, still requires a stable and continuous energy supply to support its economy. He emphasized that nuclear power—both traditional reactors and newer small modular technologies—could play a role in ensuring energy reliability and national energy sovereignty.
Birol added that countries with limited domestic energy resources should carefully evaluate all available options to balance sustainability, affordability, and security of supply.
