French municipal elections 2026: 19.37% voter turnout at Midday
As France holds the first round of its 2026 municipal elections, voter turnout reached 19.37% by 12 p.m., according to the Ministry of the Interior. This is nearly one point higher than the turnout at the same time in 2020, but still significantly lower than national legislative elections in 2024.
Participation is closely monitored, as local elections in France can be decided by very narrow margins—even in major cities. In 2014, nearly two-thirds of eligible voters participated, but turnout dropped sharply during the 2020 elections amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Regional turnout shows stark differences. Departments such as Corse-du-Sud (30.34%), Aude (28.52%), and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (28.45%) recorded high participation, while urban areas like Seine-Saint-Denis (10.16%), Yvelines (12.13%), and Hauts-de-Seine (13.75%) lagged behind.
Political analysts and campaign teams will closely watch participation rates, which can play a decisive role in determining the outcome in many municipalities. Updated turnout figures are expected at 5 p.m., offering a clearer picture of the electorate’s engagement.
