Sweden: Left Opposition Leads Significantly Less Than a Month Before Elections
Less than a month before the parliamentary elections on September 13, the Swedish political landscape is becoming increasingly clear. A survey conducted for the public broadcaster SVT shows the center-left opposition leading by 10 percentage points over the currently ruling right-wing coalition.
A Gap That Weakens the Government
As the election approaches, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and the four parties in his coalition are facing a particularly significant deficit.
According to the survey results reported on Tuesday by SVT, the opposition has a lead that the political leaders of the majority will have little time to try to reduce. The gap is even more concerning for the government camp as the electoral campaign now enters its final stretch.
The public broadcaster emphasizes that no Swedish government has ever managed to close a gap of this magnitude in such a short time.
Magdalena Andersson in a Favorable Position
The center-left opposition is notably supported by Magdalena Andersson, former Prime Minister and a central figure in Swedish politics.
A rise in her camp could pave the way for a change in leadership after the September elections. The vote will allow citizens to determine the composition of the next Parliament and, consequently, the political balance that will govern the country.
The current dynamics thus give the opposition a particularly favorable position, even though a survey does not constitute a definitive prediction of the electoral outcome.
A Decisive Campaign Ahead
For Ulf Kristersson and his partners, the coming weeks will be crucial. The majority must not only convince undecided voters but also mobilize its traditional electorate to reduce the gap observed in opinion polls.
SVT estimates that only a spectacular recovery could now prevent a government defeat. This formulation underscores the extent of the deficit accumulated by the right-wing coalition.
The September 13 Vote on the Horizon
Swedish voters are called to the polls on September 13 in a context where the prospect of a change in leadership appears increasingly credible.
The campaign can still alter the power dynamics, particularly in favor of a major political event or a shift in voter concerns. But at this stage, the survey gives a clear advantage to the center-left.
With less than four weeks until the vote, the ruling coalition thus faces a significant challenge: to reverse a trend that currently places the opposition as the favorite.
