Morocco and five Arab countries back Infantino

The presidents of six Arab football associations, including Morocco, Egypt and Qatar, have expressed their full support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino as he faces growing criticism from several football confederations.

The joint statement was issued by the football associations of Morocco, Egypt, Qatar, Mauritania, Lebanon and Sudan. The six countries reaffirmed their confidence in Infantino’s leadership and praised his efforts to expand opportunities and promote the development of football around the world.

The Arab football leaders also highlighted the role of the sport in bringing communities and peoples closer together. They said they looked forward to continuing cooperation with Infantino to strengthen global football and increase the contribution of Arab countries to the international game.

Infantino is currently under pressure following controversy surrounding a proposal to sell stakes in the men’s World Cup to private investors. UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have reportedly increased pressure on the FIFA president, with some officials believed to favor his departure.

At the same time, Infantino has retained important political and football support. Former United States President Donald Trump publicly defended the FIFA chief, describing him positively and warning that replacing him would be a serious mistake.

However, not all football associations have maintained their support. The Football Association of Ireland reportedly became the latest FIFA member to withdraw its backing, following similar positions from the English and Welsh football associations.

The dispute comes as Infantino prepares for a possible fourth and final term as FIFA president. His position had appeared relatively secure only a few weeks earlier, particularly following the financial success of the 2026 World Cup, which reportedly generated around 15 billion dollars in revenue.

Victor Montagliani, president of CONCACAF, has been mentioned as a potential rival to Infantino. The next FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 2027, while candidates are expected to be formally announced by November 18, 2026.

The growing divide within international football could therefore make the upcoming election a significant test of Infantino’s influence and the balance of power between FIFA and its continental confederations.
