Spain reports more than 530 medical consultations after solar eclipse

More than 530 people in Spain sought medical assistance following the total solar eclipse observed across parts of the country on August 12, according to Spanish news outlet Infobae.

Most of the reported cases involved eye discomfort, highlighting the risks associated with observing a solar eclipse without adequate eye protection. Looking directly at the Sun during an eclipse can cause serious retinal damage, even when the brightness appears significantly reduced.

The medical consultations were reported across 11 autonomous communities, as large crowds gathered to witness the rare astronomical event. The eclipse attracted considerable public attention because it was the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999.

The total eclipse was visible in several locations across the Northern Hemisphere, including Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and Spain. In parts of Western Europe where totality was not visible, the Moon nevertheless covered a large proportion of the solar disk.

The phenomenon briefly turned daylight into darkness in areas located along the path of totality, creating a striking spectacle for observers and attracting significant interest from both the public and the scientific community.

The cases reported in Spain also served as a reminder of the importance of using certified solar viewing equipment during astronomical events. Ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient to protect the eyes from the intense solar radiation that can reach the retina.

The eclipse was widely followed across Europe, with authorities and health professionals emphasizing the need for safe viewing practices to prevent avoidable eye injuries during future solar events.
