Morocco expands its defense capabilities with advanced Israeli systems and missiles
Morocco is continuing to modernize its military capabilities as part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s defense infrastructure and improving its ability to respond to evolving air and ground threats.
Cooperation with Israeli defense company Rafael has become an important element of this modernization process, involving systems and missiles either acquired by Morocco or reportedly under consideration.
Among the most prominent systems associated with this cooperation is the Spyder air defense system, which uses missiles from the Python and Derby families. The platform is designed to counter a range of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as certain types of missiles. Rafael describes Spyder as a flexible air defense solution capable of operating across different ranges and against multiple types of targets.
Morocco’s reported defense capabilities also include the Spike anti-tank missile family, designed to provide ground forces with advanced capabilities against armored vehicles and tanks. The Spike family includes several variants intended for different ranges and operational requirements, allowing the systems to be deployed by infantry, special forces and combat platforms.
Beyond systems already associated with Moroccan defense capabilities, recent reports have pointed to possible Moroccan interest in more advanced technologies. These include Sky Spear, a long-range air-to-air missile unveiled by Rafael at the Paris Air Show in 2023. However, reports concerning potential Moroccan acquisition of such systems should be distinguished from confirmed purchases.
Another system mentioned in reports is Sky Sonic, which is designed around advanced missile-interception capabilities. There have also been reports of discussions involving the Delilah cruise missile, a system intended for precision strikes at extended ranges. Available information indicates that some of these capabilities remain subject to evaluation or negotiations rather than confirmed deployment.
Moroccan interest in directed-energy defense technologies has also attracted attention, particularly the Iron Beam laser system. Rafael describes Iron Beam as a high-energy laser designed to intercept various aerial threats, including rockets, artillery projectiles and drones.
Taken together, these systems illustrate the growing importance of layered defense capabilities, combining short-range air defense, anti-armor weapons, advanced air-to-air missiles and emerging laser technologies.
The modernization effort also extends beyond the acquisition of military equipment. Cooperation with foreign defense companies could contribute to technology transfers, industrial partnerships and the development of Morocco’s domestic defense-industrial base.
Morocco’s broader strategy reflects an effort to diversify its defense technology suppliers while strengthening the capabilities of its armed forces. Airspace protection, precision strike capabilities and the modernization of ground and air forces remain among the key priorities shaping the country’s evolving defense strategy.
