More than 600 migrants voluntarily leave Ceuta after weeks of uncertainty

More than 600 migrants who had entered Ceuta irregularly have voluntarily left the Spanish enclave over the past 48 hours, according to Spanish authorities. The departures reportedly followed weeks of uncertainty for migrants who had been waiting in the city without clear prospects of reaching mainland Spain.

Spanish news agency EFE reported that many of those who left decided to return after realizing that moving onward to the Spanish mainland was not currently possible. The latest departures come as thousands of migrants remain dispersed across different parts of Ceuta, with their future still uncertain.

Voluntary departures have occurred previously during the recent migration crisis. Spanish authorities reportedly recorded around 73,500 departures toward Morocco since August 2, while Moroccan authorities have reported approximately 40,000 crossings during the mass influx into Ceuta at the end of July.

The events have also resulted in a significant humanitarian toll. Human rights organizations have reported that more than 140 people died in connection with the migration crisis, although figures vary depending on the source.

One of the main unresolved issues concerns unaccompanied minors who remain in Ceuta. Their number is estimated to be in the dozens, and Morocco has expressed its willingness to facilitate their return. Moroccan authorities have also called on Spain to accelerate the procedures required for their repatriation.

The latest voluntary departures highlight the difficult situation facing migrants who entered Ceuta irregularly and subsequently found themselves unable to continue their journey. They also underline the broader challenges surrounding irregular migration, border management and the protection of vulnerable migrants between Morocco and Spain.

The situation remains closely watched by both countries as authorities seek solutions for those still in Ceuta while addressing the humanitarian and administrative consequences of the recent influx.
