North Korea condemns US-South Korea military drills

North Korea has strongly criticized the upcoming joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, warning that it will respond to what it considers growing security threats with a new level of deterrence.

The warning comes ahead of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise, scheduled to begin on Monday and continue through August 27. Pyongyang described the drills as preparations for a potential large-scale military confrontation and accused Washington and Seoul of strengthening their capabilities for modern warfare.

A spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said the country would respond firmly to what it views as hostile actions. Pyongyang stressed that its security policy is based on maintaining the ability to counter emerging threats and protecting what it considers its core national security interests.

North Korean authorities also criticized the scale and nature of the exercises, arguing that the drills could further intensify tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The annual exercises typically involve military readiness and coordination between South Korean and US forces, making them a recurring source of friction with Pyongyang.

The latest dispute follows a series of weapons tests by North Korea. The country launched missiles toward the East Sea in recent days, including another two-missile launch on Wednesday, according to the information cited in the source report. Pyongyang has previously presented such tests as part of its efforts to strengthen its military deterrence.

The confrontation highlights the persistent security tensions in Northeast Asia, where military exercises, missile tests and competing security strategies continue to raise concerns about the possibility of further escalation.
