Hormuz shipping traffic falls below monthly average amid renewed U.S.-Iran tensions
Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz remained below its average level in August 2026, as renewed tensions between the United States and Iran raised concerns over the security of one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.
According to data from Kpler covering the first part of August, an average of around 12 cargo vessels have been crossing the strait each day. On Thursday, however, only nine vessels were recorded, an improvement from the five ships reported the previous day but still below the monthly average.
The latest figures showed that five vessels entered the Gulf, while four headed toward the Gulf of Oman. Most of the vessels reportedly used the Iranian side of the shipping route, highlighting the continued importance of the passage despite the heightened security environment.
The decline in traffic comes as Washington and Tehran exchange claims over control of the strait. An Iranian official said that the waterway remained under Iran’s control and management, while the United States said it could maintain maritime pressure on Iran for an extended period and indicated that economic pressure on Tehran could increase.
Concerns over maritime security were reinforced by an incident involving two tankers operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. The company said the vessels came under attack while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday evening. No injuries were reported, while the United Arab Emirates attributed responsibility for the incident to Iran.
The developments have increased uncertainty for shipping companies and energy markets because the Strait of Hormuz is a major transit route for global oil and gas supplies. Any prolonged disruption could affect transportation costs, insurance premiums and energy prices, particularly if commercial operators begin avoiding the area or reducing the frequency of crossings.
For regional economies and international markets, the situation remains closely linked to the wider confrontation between Washington and Tehran. The level of maritime activity in the coming days could therefore provide an important indication of how shipping operators are responding to the evolving security risks.
