Uber and Pony.ai plan to deploy 2,000 autonomous taxis across Europe and the Middle East
Uber Technologies is expanding its ambitions in autonomous transportation through an expanded partnership with Chinese self-driving technology company Pony.ai, with plans to deploy around 2,000 autonomous vehicles across selected markets in Europe and the Middle East.
The initiative builds on the companies’ existing cooperation in Zagreb, Croatia, where they have been working on autonomous taxi services and testing the technology in real-world urban conditions.
Under the expanded partnership, Pony.ai and Uber aim to bring autonomous vehicles to additional markets, although the companies have not yet provided a detailed list of cities or a specific timetable for the wider rollout.
The Middle East is also included in the expansion strategy, highlighting the growing interest in autonomous mobility across the region. Several cities are investing in smart transportation infrastructure and artificial intelligence-based mobility solutions as they seek to modernize urban transport.
For Uber, the partnership provides an opportunity to expand autonomous ride-hailing services by working with a specialized technology company rather than developing every component of the self-driving system internally.
The move comes as competition intensifies among technology and transportation companies seeking to commercialize autonomous driving. Industry players are increasingly moving beyond limited pilot projects toward larger fleets capable of operating in multiple cities.
The planned deployment could also provide valuable data on how autonomous vehicles perform under different traffic, regulatory and environmental conditions. For cities and transport authorities, the expansion is likely to raise new questions surrounding safety, regulation, infrastructure and the future role of human drivers.
The partnership reflects a broader transformation in the global mobility industry, as autonomous vehicles gradually move from experimental programs toward commercial transportation services designed for everyday passengers.
