European unity strengthens push for Ukraine peace as talks advance
European leaders reaffirmed their collective support for Ukraine’s peace efforts after a joint call with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following their meeting at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. The conversation, which included top officials from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Finland, Poland, and Norway, centered on security guarantees for Ukraine and ways to solidify progress toward a negotiated end to the war with Russia.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said tangible progress had been made and emphasized that Europe remains ready to work alongside Washington and Kyiv to consolidate gains. Leaders agreed that any peace process must ensure “ironclad” security guarantees from the outset. The discussion came at a decisive moment as diplomatic channels intensify following nearly four years of conflict.
Trump and Zelenskyy indicated that around 90 percent of the current negotiations have been settled, with security arrangements between the United States and Ukraine already finalized. However, the status of contested territories in Donbas and the future of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant remain sources of dispute. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that coalition members would meet in Paris in early January to outline specific national commitments to Ukraine’s defense and security.
In a joint statement, European leaders urged Moscow to act responsibly and show genuine willingness to cease hostilities. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni highlighted the need to preserve unity among allies as talks progress, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated the priority of achieving a durable and just peace. The diplomatic efforts intensified after a series of Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, killing at least one person, as Zelenskyy traveled to Florida for his meeting.
President Trump announced he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin following the discussions and that both Ukrainian and European delegations will head to Washington in January for the next round of negotiations.
