Eight Hezbollah members killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon
Eight members of Hezbollah were killed in Israeli airstrikes in eastern Lebanon on Friday, according to a statement from the movement. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that ten people died in strikes in the Bekaa Valley, while two others were killed in the Ain el-Héloué Palestinian camp. The Israeli military said its targets included Hezbollah “command centers.”
President Joseph Aoun condemned the attacks as a blatant aggression undermining diplomatic efforts by Lebanon and friendly countries to maintain stability and prevent hostilities. Meanwhile, Hezbollah MP Rami Abou Hamdane called for the suspension of the ceasefire monitoring committee meetings until Israeli strikes cease. The committee, which includes representatives from the United States, France, Lebanon, Israel, and the United Nations, is scheduled to meet next week.
Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have continued despite a ceasefire that ended the 2024 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel maintains the strikes target Hezbollah rearmament and its ally Hamas. A Hezbollah commander was reportedly killed in the Bekaa Valley attacks on Friday.
The Lebanese government has announced a four-month renewable period to implement the second phase of its plan to disarm Hezbollah, which emerged weakened from the 2024 conflict. Israeli authorities have expressed concern over the slow progress. Since the ceasefire, over 370 people have reportedly been killed in Israeli raids in Lebanon, according to an AFP tally based on Lebanese data.
