Cyclone disrupts major LNG production sites in Australia
A powerful cyclone has disrupted operations at key liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Australia, affecting global energy supply at a time of heightened market volatility.
Energy giant Chevron confirmed that production had been interrupted at major gas projects, including the Gorgon and Wheatstone facilities, located off the coast of Western Australia. Together, these sites account for a significant share of global LNG output.
The disruptions were triggered by a tropical cyclone moving near the region, forcing precautionary shutdowns and impacting operations. Another major processing facility operated by Woodside Energy also reported production interruptions at its Karratha site.
Australia is one of the world’s leading exporters of LNG, and any disruption to its production can have immediate effects on international markets. The situation is further complicated by ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, which have already strained global energy supply chains.
The Strait of Hormuz—a critical route for energy shipments—has been affected by regional instability, leading to reduced exports from key producers and increased transportation risks.
As a result, LNG prices in parts of Asia, where many countries rely heavily on imported fuel, have surged significantly in recent weeks. Analysts warn that continued disruptions, whether from natural disasters or geopolitical conflicts, could further intensify pressure on global energy markets.
Efforts are currently underway to restore production in Australia’s affected facilities, but the timeline remains uncertain as weather conditions and safety assessments continue to influence operations.
