Lula criticizes US tariffs on Brazil as harmful to trade partnership
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has criticized new US tariffs imposed on Brazilian goods, describing the measures as unfair and warning that they could damage bilateral relations between the two countries.
In an opinion article published by The Washington Post on Sunday, Lula argued that the tariff policy represented a strategic mistake that could increase costs for American consumers while weakening economic cooperation between Brazil and the United States.
Brazilian leader challenges Washington’s trade decision
Lula said the new duties, which range from 12.5% to 37.5% on Brazilian products, were introduced despite previous discussions between officials from both governments.
According to the Brazilian president, technical arguments and diplomatic efforts had been presented before the decision was taken, including documents he personally delivered to US President Donald Trump.
Lula argued that the measures failed to reflect the importance of the economic relationship between the two nations.
Concerns over impact on consumers and businesses
The Brazilian leader warned that higher tariffs could have consequences beyond Brazil’s exporters, potentially increasing prices for consumers in the United States.
He also said the measures risk undermining a longstanding commercial partnership and creating unnecessary tensions between two major economies in the Western Hemisphere.
Trade dispute adds pressure to bilateral ties
The tariff dispute comes as Brazil seeks to maintain strong international trade links while protecting its domestic industries and export sectors.
The Brazilian government has already introduced support measures for companies affected by the new US trade restrictions, including financial assistance programs aimed at reducing the impact on businesses.
Lula’s comments highlight growing disagreements over trade policy, with Brasília urging dialogue and negotiation as the preferred path for resolving economic disputes.
Future negotiations remain possible
Despite his criticism, the Brazilian president emphasized the importance of maintaining communication channels with Washington.
The next steps will depend on whether both governments can find common ground through diplomatic discussions and address concerns surrounding tariffs, market access and economic cooperation.
